Billy Graham was born in 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He went to Taft High School. In 1935, he graduated from Wheaton College with a bachelor’s degree in history and psychology. After college he married Ruth McNeill on July 9, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1941, they had their first child Paul; then they had a daughter named Nancy the following year and a son named Franklin three years later. Graham and his family moved to Montreat, North Carolina in 1945. In 1948 he became a pastor at the College Park church in Charlotte and remained there until retiring from there in 1975.

After meeting George Herbert Walker Bush in 1951, Billy Graham bought land for his church until it was finished. In 1964, he helped to buy the land for his organization’s headquarters building, which would eventually become the new home of his ministry.
